Screenings

Preventive screenings covered by insurance and Medicare

Most screenings on this site are on the no-cost preventive lists of HealthCare.gov and Medicare. This page quotes both lists, item by item, next to the USPSTF recommendation.

Private plans and the Marketplace

  • "All Marketplace health plans and many other plans must cover the following list of preventive services without charging you a copayment or coinsurance." (healthcare.gov)
  • Generally they are no-cost "when provided by an in-network medical provider", "even if you haven't met your deductible." (healthcare.gov)
  • The USPSTF describes its grade A and B recommendations as "relevant for implementing the Affordable Care Act." (USPSTF, A and B list)

For women, plans also cover the HRSA women's guidelines: see women's preventive services guidelines (WPSI) vs USPSTF.

Medicare

  • "You pay nothing for most preventive services if you get the services from a health care provider who accepts assignment." (medicare.gov)
  • The "Welcome to Medicare" visit is available "once within the first 12 months you have Part B". It "isn't a comprehensive physical exam." (medicare.gov)
  • The yearly Wellness visit is "once every 12 months" and gives "a written plan (like a checklist) letting you know what screenings, vaccines, and other preventive services you need." It "isn't a routine physical exam." (medicare.gov)
  • For both visits, Medicare says you may pay coinsurance, and the Part B deductible may apply, if the provider does other tests or services in the same visit that the preventive benefit does not cover. (medicare.gov, Welcome visit) (medicare.gov, Wellness visit)

"Not on the list" means the item is not named on that page as of 2026-10-28. It does not mean a plan will not pay for it. Ask your plan or Medicare before a test if cost matters. See also what tests are in an annual physical and build my screening plan.
